shedding a skin, the hobo returns home

Around this time of year a lot of teams finish their season by turning out in their brand new kit for the next. So it shall be with this as, with the season about to come to a close, we debut not so much a new look but a new name. Long overdue to my mind but I should probably explain my thinking behind this switcheroo.

The first line of “Under The Moon Of Love, our terrace anthem, is “Let’s go for a little walk…” This has become something of a catchphrase, perhaps a statement of relaxed intent, for us Havant & Waterlooville fans, appearing prominently on our big daddy flag that some of my Hawk colleagues clubbed together to pay for, as well as on badges produced for the club shop.

“Let’s go for a little walk…” also fits well with the travelling theme of this website but, you will have noticed, that the strollin’ element has changed somewhat in the last year or so. With my temporary Liverpool home now sold, and London now a permanent base, I’m back into the Conference South range and so I can flick the switch back to the default Havant & ‘Ville. It matters more when your heart’s wrapped up in it, after all.

Considering I’m about to take on a London mortgage, any jollying monies that are left will naturally be directed towards H&W. Besides, being a southerner, going to watch Leyton, Tooting & Mitcham or Hillingdon Borough as a neutral won’t be anywhere near as exotic, trust me, as rollin’ in to Barrow, Curzon Ashton or Cefn Mawr. After all, it’s not like the Hawks are likely to play at any of these fellas.

So, as has been seen this season, the content on here is likely to remain pretty H&W-centric. As a result, it’s time I think for a change of name. ‘Waddy and FA Cup run referencing titles like ‘A Little Walk’, ‘The Binman’s Shin’, ‘Talk Sweet Talk’ and ‘The 87th Minute’ were considered, whilst 'Hobo Kop' definitely wasn't. My old chum Leon’s suggestion of ‘Dub Steps’ takes the prize though, mainly ‘cos it keeps the journeying premise and also because there’s a double music reference in there.

Firstly, dub step is a sub-genre of electro-dance music that’s cropped up in the last few years – apologies to anyone who’s surfed in here looking for stuff on Skream or Digital Mystikz. Secondly, regular readers will also be familiar with my use of the abbreviation ‘H&Dub’, a condensed bastardisation of electrifying genre-skipping late-90’s outfit Asian Dub Foundation which, to give appropriate credit, I nicked from one of my esteemed Hawk colleagues, Ade Oakley. Ade also being the frontman of Portsmouth punk-rock bastions Red Letter Day continues the musical theme somewhat.

This theme will also be increasingly relevant on these pages as I’ll also be throwing in occasional reviews of the alt.rock, avant-garde and independent scene gigs I take a punt on from time to time. Hopefully these will be of interest to some of you; the little walk, as't were, merely extend from dilapidated old terraces to east London basement bar flea-pits. This will keep things ticking over as, for reasons of time and money, the football content will reduce (as I don’t intend this to be a week-in-week-out Hawk diary as such) but hopefully not significantly. Neutral action won’t cease completely, as I still view the rounds of the FA Cup prior to H&W’s entry with perhaps inadvisable enthusiasm and the ‘Hobo in my pocket’ (or ‘filler material’ as you might know it) shall also remain.

We begin the new Dub Steps reign of terror with the close season, of course, but there’s a backlog of stuff, including a couple of games from my holiday to Zagreb back in March, as well as Adrian's Chicago stuff, to keep things weekly. Over the summer, there will hopefully be a little bit of cricket, perhaps some Euro 2008 stuff, and also I may dip back into my writing archive to flesh out pocket hobo picture entries. I don’t mean re-posting old bits from this site, but maybe some Vanity Project music stuff, perhaps some pieces from my college and university magazines, or maybe even further back. At some point you will be able to read about my pubescent fixation with professional wrestling and also ‘My trip to Fishbourne Roman Palace’ by Skiffoid Action, aged 8. Oh yes.

Bloody hell.
I'm promoting a dubstep night in St Helens ( actually yes, there is interest in it, which shocked me more than anyone ) and I thought I'd found a St Helens blog on dubstep! But enjoyed your writing nonetheless and will now steal your 'Bert Trautmann - neck-based legend' line for future use.
Good stuff indeed.

Thanks Stephen

A bit of a six degrees of separation thing going on here. Cheers for your comments and best of luck with the night.
